My pictures have blue "lightning" streaks on them. What happened?

Those "lightning streaks" are probably the result of static discharge on the film surface. While occasionally caused by automated equipment at the photofinisher, it is possible to generate static discharge on your film while in the camera if the film is advanced or rewound too quickly. Buildup of static electricity typically occurs only during periods of low humidity and low temperature.

These branching streaks or blotches are most noticeable on prints from underexposed (or "thin") negatives. The static discharge has its greatest effect on the yellow dye layer of the film, thus resulting in the blue coloration on the print.
